RICA

  WHAT IS RICA?
RICA is short for the Regulation of Interceptions of Communication and Provision-Related Information Act (Try saying that in one breath-phew!).

RICA will allow law enforcement officers the right to call on all telecommunication service providers to hand over information about their customers. With crime on the increase, Virgin Mobile fully supports RICA and advises all our customers to do so too. We can all do our bit to kick crime into touch.

WHAT DOES RICA REQUIRE FROM ME?

We admit RICA registration can be a pain in the butt. However, law is law and it needs to be done. Come on over to your nearest Virgin Mobile store, bring your bar coded ID book or Passport (NOT your Driver’s License) and register the following information:

  • Cell Number
  • Full name and surname
  • Physical address (where you stay)
Please bring with you a doc that includes your name and residential address (Bank statement, municipal rates, retail account etc).
  WHERE MUST I REGISTER?

At any of our Virgin Mobile stores - there are 32 of them nationwide!
You can also RICA at selected Pick n Pay, Checkers and Shoprite stores.
Look out for the RICA sign.

WHEN MUST I COME ON OVER TO REGISTER?

Now! RICA was implemented on the 1st of July 2009. But, customers already active before 1st July 2009 have 18 months to register.

All new SIM Cards sold from 1 July needs to be RICA registered before it can be connected on the network. The law applies to all Prepay and Postpay customers and SIM swaps too.

  WHEN MUST I REGISTER BY?

NOW!!!!! You have until 31st December 2010 to register your phone. Remember If you don’t register, you will be disconnected from the cellular network.

WHERE TO RICA YOUR SIM VIA SMS??

SMS the store (Virgin Mobile, Shoprite, Checkers or Pick n Pay) and your province to 32977. (Example, Virgin Mobile Eastern Cape.) R1 per SMS.

Remember to leave a space between the store name and the province. Also leave a space on either side of the "n" of Pick n Pay.
